Product Architecture & MVP Roadmap Case Study
Salon OS: From Operational Bottlenecks to Scalable Salon Platform
A step-by-step product case study documenting how product vision, phased MVP testing, user friction reduction, and technical PRD specifications transformed daily operations for Fast Eddie’s (La Porte, IN).
Phased MVP Testing & Validation Roadmap
To mitigate technical risk and avoid disrupting daily salon revenue, Miles Barden designed a 5-stage iterative MVP rollout to test critical hypotheses before full software platform deployment.
MVP Test #1 • Payment & Compliance Hypothesis
SMS Pre-Auth Links & Zero-PCI Validation
Status: Validated
Problem / Hypothesis
Local PC card storage creates catastrophic PCI compliance liability. Hypothesis: Clients will comfortably save payment cards via pre-booking SMS links.
MVP Experiment
Sent Stripe Elements hosted checkout links via SMS to 50 booking clients prior to their appointment.
Key Metric & Result
92% pre-auth completion rate; zero credit card numbers stored on local salon hardware (SAQ-A compliance achieved).
MVP Test #2 • Reception Friction Hypothesis
Drag-and-Drop Front Desk Command Board
Status: Validated
Problem / Hypothesis
Legacy scheduling software required 7+ clicks per check-in. Hypothesis: A visual 5-column Kanban board will reduce receptionist training to under 10 minutes.
MVP Experiment
Deployed single-page web Kanban board (`Upcoming`, `Arrived`, `In Chair`, `Checkout`, `Completed`) at reception desk.
Key Metric & Result
65% faster check-in speed; automated drop-to-checkout modal reduced front desk invoice errors to near zero.
MVP Test #3 • Stylist & Backbar Hypothesis
Beautician Glove-Friendly "Chair Mode" & Recipe Chips
Status: Validated
Problem / Hypothesis
Stylists wearing hair dye gloves cannot type on traditional keyboards, leading to unrecorded color bowls and inventory waste.
MVP Experiment
Introduced mobile dark-mode UI with big 3-tap buttons and quick-tap backbar adjustment chips (`+1 Extra Color Bowl`).
Key Metric & Result
22% reduction in unallocated backbar inventory shrinkage; pre-selected tips masked from stylists during service.
MVP Test #4 • Client LTV & Experience Hypothesis
Client Station Kiosk & 1-Click Follow-Up Booking
Status: Validated
Problem / Hypothesis
Clients lose track of time in the chair and forget to re-book follow-ups before leaving the salon.
MVP Experiment
Mounted station tablet showing client welcome, live clock, and beverage requests. Prompted 1-click follow-up target dates (+6 to +12 wks) at checkout.
Key Metric & Result
34% increase in same-day follow-up re-bookings; enhanced client satisfaction scores.
MVP Test #5 • Enterprise Integration Hypothesis
Hardware Relay & QuickBooks Online API Sync
Status: Architecture Complete
Problem / Hypothesis
Manual daily cash drawer balancing and double-entry book balancing took managers 45+ minutes every evening.
MVP Experiment
Linked receipt printer RJ12 24V solenoid cash kicks and automated end-of-day sales sync via QuickBooks Online OAuth 2.0 API.
Key Metric & Result
Eliminated 40 minutes of daily manager closing tasks; 100% audit logging of cash drawer triggers.
Agile Product Requirements (PRD Epics)
